Comparison of match-up schemes for evaluation of space-borne LIDAR measurements of the particulate back-scattering coefficient

The space-borne lidar measurements from space-borne LIDAR were recently used to retrieve the particulate back-scattering coefficient in the upper ocean layers and have promising potential for the future of ocean color with depth-resolved observations thereby complimenting the conventional remote sensing. However, it is critical to evaluate and validate lidar measurements for ocean applications. The validation of the space-borne lidar data, in the scarcity of in situ data, was carried out by selecting spatial and temporal match-up windows in a few recent studies. Two such schemes for evaluation of the space-borne LIDAR measurements are compared in the study to assess the suitability of the schemes for validating the space-borne lidar measurements. This study uses global LIDAR data from 2008 to 2017 along with BGC-Argo profiles covering the same period globally. whereas the schemes compared here originally were carried out for the North Atlantic ocean in the year 2014 (Lacour et al.,2020) or globally from 2015 to 2017 (Bisson et al, 2020). The enhanced spatial and temporal coverage of the data set used in this study while applying the two schemes simultaneously on the same data enables the assessment of the two schemes with a wider scope of applicability. Suggestions on improving the spatiotemporal match-up scales for the LIDAR data as well as for improving the data processing are proposed in the study based on the comparison of the two evaluation schemes. The study will enhance the usability of the LIDAR data from CALIOP for ocean optical applications.
