Evaluating atmospheric correction algorithms for a glacier meltwater fjord

Most atmospheric correction algorithms for processing ocean color satellite observations are not optimized for use in optically complex coastal waters. These waters tend to contain large amounts of dissolved and particulate matter, often advected from land, influencing their color. These algorithms, designed to remove the effect of the atmosphere on the signal reaching the remote sensing sensor, tend to overestimate atmospheric scattering in case-2 waters. This can result in over-correction, and underestimation of the water-leaving signal. Here, we evaluate a number of commonly used atmospheric correction algorithms, including Sen2Cor, C2RCC, ACOLITE and iCOR, on Sentinel-2 observations of a Norwegian glacial meltwater fjord. We compare the retrieval of optical and biological parameters from remote sensing to in-situ measurements from the same fjord at approximately the same time, to evaluate the performance of the algorithms in this particular type of optically complex waters.
