Calibration Method for Large Dynamic Range Polarized Transmissometers
Measuring the depolarization of transmitted or near-forward scattered light is gaining considerable interest due to its potential to provide information about the nature and concentration of various types of hydrosols, including phytoplankton. We propose a simple method that can be used on a ship or in the field to calibrate polarized transmissometers and near forward scattering meters over a dynamic range of more than five orders of magnitude, corresponding to the expected range of depolarization variability in natural waters. The method applies equally well to both circular and linear polarization instruments. We present both theoretical and experimental results of the calibration method for linear and circular polarization.
