Visualization and Access of Satellite Ocean Data from NOAA CoastWatch

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) CoastWatch serves a variety of satellite data products with global and regional spatial coverage for ocean, coastal and inland water applications. Exploration of these data are facilitated by the NOAA CoastWatch Data Portal map viewer (https://coastwatch.noaa.gov/cw_html/cwViewer.html). Data products are from NOAA and non-NOAA satellites. Many of the products are developed and processed routinely by NOAA satellite Science Teams. CoastWatch distributes products through services such as web, FTP (File Transfer Protocol), THREDDS (Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services), and ERDDAP servers. Ocean color products from VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite), OLCI (Ocean and Land Color Instrument), and MSI (MultiSpectral Instrument) and true color products can be viewed in the portal. Unlike many online tools, the CoastWatch map viewer enables easy download of the underlying NetCDF (Network Common Data Format) datasets either directly or through the use of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). A shopping cart feature builds a list of data files for download and use at a future date. The map viewer allows investigators to view datasets from multiple dates through the Active Layers feature and to adjust palettes, scaling, and opacity, permitting optimal visualization across multiple parameters. The viewer can be used to plan cruises, marking and exporting waypoints or do post-cruise analyses or analyze animal tracks in context of oceanographic features. Key features of the map viewer will be shared at the training session on Sunday. A live demo may be available at the poster session.
