Gold grains of Pine pollen on the water surface of the southern Baltic Sea
Each spring, gold grains of pine pollen covers large areas of the Baltic waters. Measurements have shown that there are areas where its concentrations in this surface layer are so high that they are the dominant constituent of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) . Not considering the presence of pine pollen grains can give rise to serious errors in remote measurements of water composition and properties. The paper presents an analysis of the particle size distributions spectra, which enable the separation of the part associated only with pine pollen grains from the overall SPM. We then tested the proposed method of analysing the SPM composition, which showed that the LISST-100X instrument is both a useful and an effective means for the in situ detection of the pine pollen in Baltic waters. In addition, the data collected in May made it possible to estimate the pine pollen concentration in the waters of the Baltic Sea. Measurements made in the surface water layer showed considerable spatial variability in pollen concentrations; locally, relative concentrations on the surface exceeded 40% of the total SPM concentration.
