GLORIA: Global community dataset of in situ radiometry and water quality
We present an open-access dataset of over 7000 hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance spectra and concomitant water quality measurements from lakes, rivers, estuaries and coastal oceans collected globally during the last 30 years. These water bodies are extremely challenging environments for remote sensing due to their optical complexity, limited spatial scale, and wide range of optically significant constituents. The GLORIA dataset fills an important need for the development of remote sensing algorithms for inland and coastal waters by providing the largest and most diverse set of quality controlled observations worldwide. This presentation summarizes the biogeographic range of the data and describes its optical diversity. We present our method for the quality control of the reflectance spectra using a range of indicators for the fidelity of these measurements. The data have been curated from a community of multinational researchers working on projects with a diverse range of objectives, resources, and funding sources, but shared attention to sampling protocols, tenacity to reach remote and inaccessible sites, commitment to establish long-term trend monitoring sites, and the recognition of the value of open-access datasets for public benefit. The utility of the data has been demonstrated in successful algorithm development efforts using data-intensive machine-learning and semi-analytical methods. These advances have already spurred developments in the large-scale monitoring of water bodies critical to human livelihoods, biodiversity, and cultural and recreational values and are expected to increase the accessibility of remote sensing as a water quality monitoring tool.
