Calibration and characterization of a new high sensitivity, three-channel, bio-optical sensor

We present the recent results from a new bio-optical sensor combining measurements of backscatter and fluorescence. The RBRtridente was designed to accommodate oceanographic platforms with low-power requirements and is subject to a rigorous calibration process. In this work, we first review the calibration process and its relevance for open ocean measurements. We explore two routes for chlorophyll calibration; one using a transfer standard, verified with a fluorometric spectrophotometer, and a second where the sensor is calibrated directly in acetone extracted chlorophyll. Second, we investigate the technical performance of the sensor from lab-based measurements, characterizing the sensor’s resolution, power consumption, and linearity. Finally, we perform an inter-comparison with equivalent sensors (e.g. WetLabs ECOPuck, and SBESeaOWL) using in-situ data collected in a coastal environment.
