Estimation and evaluation of GOCI daily PAR

Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is the world’s first geostationary ocean color sensor and it finished the mission at 2021. GOCI produced ocean color products such as chlorophyll and total suspended material concentration. However, there were absence of some products including photosynthesis available radiation (PAR). PAR is one of the most important factor to calculate primary production at the ocean. We estimated daily PAR from GOCI imagery with plane-parallel based PAR model. And then GOCI daily PAR was evaluated with in-situ measurement PAR data. In-situ measurement data was observed at two ocean research stations, Socheong-cho and Ieodo stations, from 2015 to 2021. First of all, quality control of in-situ measurement data was carried out, and then, GOCI daily PAR was estimated. Estimated GOCI daily PAR was compared with in-situ measurement and they showed a good agreement, with low RMSE (under 10 %). However, there was a bias between in-situ and GOCI daily PAR data. To increase accuracy of GOCI daily PAR, clear sky correction was carried out. After clear sky correction, accuracy of GOCI daily PAR was improved from 10 % to 4 %. Comparison of GOCI daily PAR with other sensors were carried out, too. In conclusion, GOCI daily PAR showed the best performance at the ocean around Korean Peninsula. In future works, GOCI hourly PAR will be studied.
