The Baltic Sea primary production based on ten years of SatBałtyk System and eCUDO.pl data base
Contemporary systems based on data recorded by satellites make it possible to determine the photosynthetic primary production of organic matter (PP). In the waters of the Baltic Sea, the SatBałtyk system launched in 2015 (www.satbaltyk.pl) is used to determine PP. Every day it provides maps of the spatial distribution of PP values and other characteristics of this sea. The data of these characteristics can be found on the eCUDO.pl project website. The collected extensive data bank made it possible to analyze a number of processes taking place in the ecosystem of this sea. Photosynthetic primary production of organic matter was analyzed based on data from 2010-2019. Statistical analyzes of data on PP available in the SatBałtyk System enabled a quantitative description of its variability in the entire area of the Baltic Sea. The daily average PP for the entire Baltic Sea ranges from about 5 mgC m-2day-1 in winter (December and January) to over 700 mgC m-2day-1 in July. The total annual PP of the Baltic Sea ranges from (37 to 45) * 10^6 tC year-1 in the analyzed period. The obtained results indicate a slight increase in the productivity of the Baltic Sea (approx. 11%) over the period of 10 years, however, this trend varies regionally.
