Ocean Colour related Science and Application projects at the European Space Agency
Ocean Optics is a domain strongly supported by the European Space Agency, through the past, on-going and planned development and/or operation of different satellite missions (Earth Explorer, Sentinels, Meteorological satellites) and their exploitation through the funding and management of different projects. In particular, the objective of this contribution is to provide an overview of the Ocean Colour related science and application projects that are currently run or planned as part of the Earth Observation Science for Society (EO4Society) programmatic element of ESA FutureEO Programme. EO4Society supports the development of innovative EO solutions that transform satellite measurements into information products with the aim to improve scientific knowledge of the Earth System and support evidence-based decisions, hereby maximizing impact and benefits of satellite data for addressing current societal challenges. In this context, ESA currently supports a variety of Ocean Colour related projects in different priority areas as Ocean Health, Biodiversity, Ocean Carbon, and Blue Economy. Examples of these projects include BOOMS (open ocean biodiversity), BiCOME (coastal ecosystems biodiversity), MedEOS (Mediterranean Sea land-based pollution monitoring), BICEP (Biological Ocean Carbon Pump), CAREHeat (Marine Heatwaves), Ocean-Health Acidification. Other relevant projects are performing exploratory work to derive ocean-colour related parameters from missions with a different primary objective (as Sentinel-5p or Aeolus), also in the context of future optical missions preparation. Aforementioned project objectives and results will be introduced and discussed in the frame of newly launched ESA initiatives like the ESA Science Clusters, the ESA Science Hub, and the on-going Joint EC-ESA Earth System Science Initiative.
