First estimation of the UV bio-optical properties of seawater from the ALADIN UV space-borne and LNG airborne lidars

The ESA AEOLUS mission has been launched on August 22, 2018 and carries the ALADIN UV lidar. The goal of the mission is to estimate the wind profiles using a high-spectral resolution lidar at 355 nm pointing 35° off nadir across-track. In the frame of the AEOLUS Ocean Color project, we aim at estimating the capability of ALADIN lidar for studying the ocean surface. UV lidar signal in the co-polarized part of the direct backscatter can be used to estimate the particulate back-scattering coefficient of the seawater and then to use this latter parameter to estimate the particulate organic carbon and the colored dissolved organic carbon. Using the High Spectral Resolution capabilities of ALADIN, an algorithm was specifically developed including cloud flags and correction of the atmospheric and surface contributions. To validate the ALADIN ocean products, a sea campaign was organized in Cabo Verde during the CADDIWA and JATAC airborne campaigns. Radiometric, optical and seawater samples were collected close in time and space to AEOLUS overpasses as well as the French airborne lidar LNG. We will show the first estimation of the diffuse attenuation coefficient Kd(355) and the back-scattering coefficient bbp(355) from ALADIN in Cabo Verde but also globally using BGC-ARGO floats. Sensitivity analysis will show the limitations of the lidar. As concomitant in-situ measurements with LNG was done in Cabo Verde, we will also show the first analysis of the capabilities of this airborne lidar to estimate Kd and bbp and a comparison with ALADIN will be provided.
